More about Nemba Washing station:

Nemba is the youngest in Greenco’s fascinating collection of washing stations. Located in the sub-hill of Vyoga, this area is one of many in Burundi that contains remarkably fertile earth. This region has become rather well-known for the growth of pumpkins. The cherries of this region are some of the last to ripen in the coffee season because of the desired altitude. The station was built in response to the requests of three communes surrounding where it now stands; Kayanza, Matongo, and Muruta. Muruta commune is particularly well known amongst the people of the area as the name is a Kirundi word meaning “superior.” The old King, Mwezi the second, favored the area for its sweet honey, vast amounts of cattle and sorghum plant. The King also had it declared that his Queens would be buried here upon their deaths and to this day, four tombs of his late Queens can be found in the commune.
